U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick hinted on Tuesday that the government secured its first trade agreement, sparking a rally in U.S. stocks. The DJIA climbed for six trading days, surging as much as 402 points, or 1%, to peak at 40,630, before closing up 300 points, or 0.8%, at 40,527. The Nasdaq Composite added 95 points, or 0.6%, to 17,461. The S&P 500 gained 32 points, or 0.6%, to 5,560, marking its longest upswing since November.
General Motors (GM.US) reported better-than-expected first-quarter results but announced it is reassessing future guidance and pausing additional stock buybacks until tariff impacts become clearer, with its shares dipping 0.6%. Tesla (TSLA.US) jumped up over 2%. Nvidia (NVDA.US) edged up 0.3%. Meta (META.US) and Apple (AAPL.US) each lifted less than 1%.
